Low Back Strain

Low Back Strain

The back is a complex structure of bone and muscle, supported by cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, and consist of  a network of blood vessels and nerves

The low back supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions such as bending and twisting. Muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking, as well as supporting the spinal column. The single most common cause of lower back pain is a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament

Muscle Strain and Ligament Sprain

A strain is an injury to either a muscle or tendon. With a back strain, the muscles and tendons that support the spine are twisted, pulled, or torn.

A sprain is the stretching or tearing of a ligament. Ligaments are the fibrous bands of tissue that connect two or more bones at a joint and prevent excessive movement of the joint. Sprains typically occur when the joint is taken beyond its functional range of motion.

Causes:-

  • Lifting a heavy object, or twisting the spine while lifting
  • Sudden movements that place too much stress on the low back, such as a fall
  • Poor posture over time
  • Sports injuries, especially in sports that involve twisting or large forces of impact

Symptoms:-

  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Muscle cramping or spasms
  • Decreased function and/or range of motion of the joint (difficulty walking, bending forward or sideways, or standing straight)
